Joana Vasconcelos at Dior Lisbon
Animal Extravaganza
Joana Vasconcelos has brought a surprising twist to the immaculate Dior Lisbon boutique, filling it with her fabric creatures, including insects, lizards, cows, and crabs. This unexpected collaboration, sparked by the Maison’s Fall/Winter 2024 ready-to-wear show, showcases a creative dialogue between Dior’s Artistic Director Maria Grazia Chiuri and the artist. Vasconcelos’ creations are artfully positioned alongside the latest fashion pieces – a wolf howls near a tweed jacket, a snake slithers by a handbag, and a crustacean peeks out from behind a vibrant red dress.
Vasconcelos’ animals, characterized by her signature style, are vibrant, bold, and larger-than-life. Constructed with lace, crochet, and embroidery, these creatures complement the surrounding textiles. Sometimes their colors resonate with the clothing, while at other times they provide a striking contrast. This setup encourages viewers to see each fashion item from a fresh perspective. This exhibit, though new, embodies the longstanding collaboration between the Maison and artists, paying tribute to Monsieur Dior’s love for both fashion design and art collection.
