This art form boasts perspectives as diverse and plentiful as humanity itself. Despite the multitude of artists, only a select few have etched their names into the collective consciousness of the audience, achieving legendary status. Paolo Roversi undeniably belongs to this elite group. To honor his remarkable contributions, the esteemed Palais Galliera in Paris has curated an exhibition showcasing some of his finest works, spanning his illustrious fifty-year career. The display offers a glimpse into his sensitivity and refined taste.
Renowned photographers often possess a distinctive style and approach, making their works easily identifiable. Italian photographer Paolo Roversi has been recognized for his unique aesthetics since his early days. His initial works, featured in the most prestigious fashion magazines, highlighted his exceptional ability to capture not only fashion items and textures but also the individuals wearing them. His approach often elevates the human subjects to the same level of importance as the garments themselves, sometimes presenting the bare body as the ultimate fashion statement.
Characterized by torch-lit, soft, sepia-toned black and white imagery with a profound depth of color, Paolo attributes the origins of his signature style to his childhood room in Ravenna. He reminisces about how “the light coming through the shutters formed ghostly, mysterious figures on the ceiling and the walls,” a vision he later recreated in his studio. This personal history and Roversi’s own reflections accompany the exhibited pieces, adding new dimensions to his work.
Running from March 16 to July 14, 2024, the exhibition guides visitors through a poetical journey where shadows and darkness give way to light and color. It features 140 pieces, including never-before-seen material, ranging from his famous Polaroid prints to archival magazines and catalogs. Through Roversi’s eyes, attendees can explore the worlds of Yohji Yamamoto, Comme des Garçons, Alexander McQueen, Christian Dior, and others, experiencing the immense beauty he has gifted to the world.
